The Dream Is Alive In Las Perlas

Here we go again. “How did you get here?”

It used to be “Why are you moving there?” until I answered “Why not?” and got only sheepish mournful looks of those who knew they never would really chase and catch a dream.

img_3659_2Why do we fear being captain of the ship that is our life in progress, and decline to live the lives we were given to the order of our dreams?

As Alexander Green reminds us, “Fear is the great barrier to success. It gives small things big shadows. It is the inverse of faith, trapping us between regret for the past and anxiety about the future.”

So, in making the conscious decision to leave behind such trappings and regret, we steered for the life that boggled the minds of those we knew, setting sail from the safe harbor of the known and “what made sense” to everyone else. We set out to be examples to our children how not to live by the “default setting” but to customize our lives.

This is how we got to a small island off the coast of Panama, from Hawaii, no less. In Hawaii there is a cry of “Kulia I Ka Nuu!” which means to strive for the highest.

So when the “why nots” far exceeded the doubtful “whys”, we packed up our two young daughters and what we could carry on a plane and moved to Central America. At 37, my husband and I “retired” to the Pearl Islands of Panama.

When I answer the “how” questions, I think to myself of luck, determination, and the belief that dreams really do come true; but what I usually answer is this, “We put the world through
a sieve, and Contadora fell into our laps.” And that is what happened. Oh, and we said “yes” to the adventure.

Panama, and specifically Contadora, gave us the home and life we were idyllically dreaming punta-galleonof. The island setting is one of beautiful tranquility offering the safety, tropical climate and ocean we require, as well as the lack of distractions we were seeking. White sand beaches edging abundant turquoise seas provide a meal at a moments notice. Birds soaring high on ocean breezes illustrate how free we now feel.

While in the US, we found the masses spinning in their eddies of chaotic daily life and “shoulds”. Contadora has converted us to noticing the world around us, the seasons (even if only 2), the way the changing light and tides continuously alter the landscape and scenic beauty of the island.

We delight in the migrations of various whales, fish and birds that frequent this archipelago. We indulge in sumptuous seafood as well as casually snack on wonderfully inexpensive local fare at the markets.

Impressive visitors and part time residents enjoy Contadora’s secure and private ambiance while yachties drop by to experience the pristine beaches on which your prints may be the only in the sand.

life-in-rp-1st-year-289Being here, we have traded in the typical “full plate American life” complete with ever ringing cell phones and deadlines for simplicity.

We know our children, and they now get to have time and quiet to know themselves. While their imaginations have grown, their dependencies on “stuff” have shrunk. They have friends of all ages and many nationalities. They speak of a future as world citizens.

A year and a half later, I am still hearing the queries, “How? Why?”. So often anxiety of the unknown and future stop us from choosing the life we dream of leading.

With faith, we can choose now to manifest such dreams and cross the barrier to success Alexander Green refers to. Relinquishing fear leads to a life with less regret and more memories to relive with passion.. We are one family relishing our dreams and I am inspired by others I meet who are also customizing their lives. Dreams really are for following.

We have heard “it isn’t about making a living; it is about making a life” yet it is up us to actually manifest this. We must be the captains of our destiny. As John A. Shield said, “A ship is safe in harbor; but that is not what ships are for.”
