Investing in reforestation is one of the ways you can legally immigrate to Panama

Investment of $80,000

The reforestation immigration law has been changed a few times over recent years as each new government issues its own version of the law. As it stands now, the law requires an investment of $80,000 for a foreigner to qualify for a residency visa (spouse and children pay a small additional fee but may immigrate under the same application).

Reducing The Procedure To The ‘Bare Bones’

Various companies in Panama are geared toward assisting foreigners in obtaining their visa through the reforestation effort. They save you (the prospective immigrant) the time and potential grief associated with actually planting and maintaining your own reforestation project.

Such companies have reduced the immigration procedure down to the bare bones of writing a check for $80,000, filling out the required immigration forms, getting your picture taken, passing a health exam, and showing up for the eventual stamps you need to get your permanent residency visa. Although painless, it is nearly impossible to predict how long the applicant may have to wait to get his or her visa due to government backlogs and general disorganization.

12.5 Acres For $80,000

Currently we offer 5 Hectares (approx. 12.5 acres) of land already planted with teak for $80,000. Under the current law, 5 hectares in the minimum number of hectares that must be planted for someone to qualify for a visa. The $80,000 investment comes with a 25 year maintenance contract which is the length of time it takes the teak to mature for harvest. The investor then receives 80% of the funds upon harvest and the management company retains the other 20%. This is a win-win, since the management company now has an incentive to maximize the value of your holdings. For the long term investor, teak typically returns 12% – 15% per annum, not adjusted for inflation.

You do not have to wait 25 years for a return on your money, you can re-sell your land after you’ve received your permanent residency visa. The re-sale value will depend on the age of the trees at the time of sale, but since the trees get 12% bigger every year, your expected rate of appreciation should be 12% per year, not adjusted for inflation.

Reforestation in Panama provides jobs for local people - particularly in rural communities where employment opportunities are scarce.

Bottom Line
