Thales is one of very few organizations to offer brokerage services in Panama.  They can enable trades on various stock and bond exchanges around the world.  They also offer online trading.  While it’s been awhile since we’ve dealt with Thales directly, the last time we checked their fees seemed high compared to E-trade or any large US brokerage house.

Panama is not the ideal location to establish a global trading platform for stocks, bonds or other securities, although it might be useful if you already have banking set up in Panama and don’t wish to use a US broker.

If you are serious about trading globally and expect to manage large volumes and/or execute a lot of trades, we are certain you would be better off with an account in the Cayman Islands, or perhaps Singapore or Hong Kong.

This is not an easy process in Panama but it is possible.  Most banks in Panama will lend money to foreign citizens to purchase a home or second home in Panama and usually expect a 20% to 30% downpayment.  Start working on this process at least 6 months in advance of when you need the loan.  Each bank has a different but similar process.  Note: banks typically will not lend to foreigners to purchase raw land, only finished condos and homes.  Construction loans are possible (to build a new home on land you own) but not easily obtained

The main thing you need to open a bank account in Panama are two reference letters, one from your home bank and another from an attorney or accountant who knows you.  These letters must be in original form (not copies or faxes) and must be signed in original ink by an officer of your bank (or by whomever is issuing the letter).  The dates on the letters should be as recent as possible (within 30 days of your application to open your bank account).  You will also need a passport and you will be asked to fill out all kinds of forms to open your account.  To smooth this process, we recommend working with Panama Relocation Attorneys (see legal services section of this web site for contact info) to assist you with opening an account, although you are certainly free to do so on your own by contacting the bank(s) directly.

About The Land For Sale

This land is located at Puerto Hondo on Isla Cebaco on the Pacific Coast of Panama.  You can see the location of Isla Cebaco in relation to Panama City and Isla Coiba, one of Panama’s most famous National Parks.

The land measures just over 5 hectares or about 12 acres.  It is bordered by a river on one side and a creek on the other.  There are enormous trees all along the river bank.  The property extends out to a point which is about 30 – 40 feet above the ocean, offering spectacular views!  The land then rises up gradually, offering several more ocean view building sites.  The property is located near a protected bay called Puerto Hondo, which enables boats to enter and moor.  Once on the wide sandy beach infront of Puerto Hondo, it is a short five minute walk to the point, where a stairway could be built to reach the top of the point.  This is one of the most spectacular building sites on the island.

While the land does not have beachfront, it does border one of the nicest sandy beaches on the island.  Beaches are not privately owned in Panama so the first 22 meters from high tide is public property and can be enjoyed by all.  There is no electricity on the island, but solar and/or wind power could be used, and water pumped from the river using a gas powered or solar powered pump.

How To Reach The Property

The property for sale is best reached from the river mouth port at Playa Reina, which is about a five minute drive from the town of Mariato.   A small boat with a 40 HP motor can reach the property in about 30 – 40 minutes.  Mariato is about a one hour drive from the city of Santiago, which is the capital of the Province of Veraguas.  Santiago provides all modern goods and services, including a large modern supermarket, hardware store, hotels, shops, restaurants, and bars.

The Surrounding Area

Mariato is the closest mainland town from Isla Cebaco.  Mariato is a quiet village that is just starting to feel the effects of tourism.  This area is still relatively undiscovered and offers a prime opportunity to invest in an area where land prices have not risen nearly as much as comparable tourism centers like Pedasi and Santa Catalina.
